Smart-Link

Smart-Link creates an asset as a link to a source asset such that changes made to either one are reflected in the other. Even when the Smart-Link is made readable only, it continues to show all changes for the source asset.

This is really useful when sharing a few assets with users outside the network for reviewing or editing these assets. The updates are always reflected both ways.

The user should have at least Contribute permission to create a Smart-Link in the same project. To create a Smart-Link from one project to another, the user should have at least Administrator permission at the source and at least Contribute permission at the destination project.

The Smart-Link asset will have a new version history.

To create a Smart-Link, right click on an asset and select Smart-Link from the popup menu. Alternatively, select the asset and select Smart-Link from the Actions menu.

In the Check-In window that appears, select from the following options:

  • Choose between radio buttons for prefix, suffix, existing name, or a new name for the Smart-Link. Modify suffix or prefix text if needed.
Prefix or suffix text will be attached with the existing name of the source asset to get the name for the Smart-Link.
  • ‘Save to current server folder’ saves the Smart-Link in the current folder. Choose ‘Browse to new server folder’ and select the folder if the Smart-Link is to be saved to another folder.
Remember that the Smart-Link should have a different name from the source asset or be placed in a different folder.
  • ‘Convert to working copy’ would check out the Smart-Link after creation. If unchecked, the Smart-Link will not be checked out.
  • ‘Make Smart-Link Writable’ makes the Smart-Link writable and editable. Uncheck this setting to make a read-only Smart-Link.

Click Smart-Link to create the new Smart-Link asset.

Make current operation is not supported for any smart-link asset.
